He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked will I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.” In all this Job did not sin, and he did not accuse God of wrongdoing.
Job 1:21–22, MEV
After suffering such devastating losses, Job’s instinct was first to worship God. I am sure that in that worship Job’s eyes were full of tears, but his heart was not turned against God. Suffering is the reality of our world. All people know the feelings of loss in their lives. In the depths of suffering, our Lord does not forget us. As we turn to Him, He hears our cries. As relationships around us betray and forsake us, God is there to comfort and lift us out of the pit. We may turn our backs on God, but God never turns His back on us. We may be tested, but God always offers renewal. His loving spirit is never far from His chosen. Job struggled but did not sin. He cried out but did not blaspheme. Job worshipped. In all times and all places, we are called to worship our Lord, and it is here He meets us. In worship, we may cry out and know He hears, and He heals. It is within worship, Job found peace, and it is this peace to which our Lord calls us.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
