My lover is dark and dazzling, better than ten thousand others!…. His mouth is sweetness itself; he is desirable in every way. Such, O women of Jerusalem, is my lover, my friend.
Song of Solomon 5:10,16, NLT
The Song of Solomon, also known as the Song of Songs, is a love story attributed to Solomon, describing his relationship with one of his wives, a Shunammite woman. One might wonder about its placement in Scripture, but upon deeper reading, we find the story of God’s love and pursuit of us, as well as how those enraptured by our Lord will pursue Him. The intimacy that our Lord desires with us as His people is unlike other deities of wood, stone, or metal. The offering desired of our Lord is us wholly. He repeats this often throughout Scripture when He states, “Your sacrifices I do not desire and your offerings I will not accept.” Gifts given begrudgingly are not gifts, and hearts that are turned away from our Lord God are what disturb Him. Our Lord is so passionate for us that in His holiness, He entered Creation as one of us and took our sin upon Himself. This is the love of our Lord, and His words that He offers are our hope and our salvation as He calls us into His eternal peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
