Then she saddled a donkey and said to her young man, “Drive and go; do not hold back the pace of the ride for me unless I tell you.” So she went and came to the man of God to Mount Carmel. Now it happened that when the man of God saw her at a distance, he said to Gehazi his young man, “Behold, there is the Shunammite.”
2 Kings 4:24–25, LSB
In desperation, the Shunammite woman rushed to the man of God for the sake of her son. God had blessed this woman through Elisha because of her openness to His servant. In her grief at the death of her son, she would not leave the side of Elisha, and in God’s power, Elisha laid on the boy and breathed life back into him. This woman saw God and His power in the man and would not yield to move away from him in her pursuit of the Lord. We are called to seek God to be in the presence of all aspects of our lives. We are not to yield or be afraid in our quest for His comfort. God’s calling does not mean that we will live a life of ease nor that we will not know grief or sorrow. We may not see our loved one returned to life like the young boy, but we can walk in the certainty of resurrection in Christ Jesus. Let our hearts be made anxious to seek God and be in His presence, knowing that we no longer need to seek out a prophet to know God’s word, but can look only to our Lord Jesus and find His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
