Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
John 15:13, ESV
Don’t you love those dramatic scenes in movies when two friends are faced with great danger and one friend says to the other, “I would die for you!” You may have heard this from or said this to a close friend at one time. Most of us will never have to live up to this pledge. Life happens, and a lot of those close friendships slip away. The true test to sacrifice in life is less centered in the giving of one’s life for another, but in the giving of time. Time may be more difficult to give. It is our most valuable resource. It is this which Jesus gave and continues to give to us. Our Lord did not only give His life, but He gave us His time as He walked with the Disciples and taught, ate, healed, and prayed. This gift is revealed to us in the Word of God. When we hear the Gospel, read the Word, or study the Word with others, it takes time. As we grow in the Word, we also grow in our giving to those who are in need. The gift of our time is giving others the hope that has been given to us in sharing the Good News. We are called to share with others the sacrifice of our Lord for us and in our giving of time to lead others into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
