Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.
Hebrews 4:1, NKJV
Baptism is a saving act, but no one is saved because of their baptism. We are saved by the promises made when being baptized, and by who the giver of those promises is. If you believe that the promises are yours, your faith is in the wrong person. Our salvation is given through our Lord and He is the giver of all promises. He does so by His grace and mercy and not a thing earned through our actions. When we lose sight of the promise-giver and forget from whom our hope comes, the issue of faith becomes all the more real and substantial. Faith, a gift given to us also, opens up the reality of who it is we worship and trust. He pours out for us His truth and the reality of our salvation as He gave of His body and poured out His blood. When we place the focus on ourselves, our worship becomes placed in the wrong direction and our praise is given in error, but in Christ and Him alone we find the comfort and joy that can lead us into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
