1 Corinthians 12:3

Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:3, ESV

A half-truth that I have heard numerous times is, “We don’t truly know the faith of another.” Indeed, we can neither determine those who are chosen by God nor those not chosen by God by our own metrics. We are also not meant to be the judge, but, as Christians, our calling is to share the Gospel of our Lord to all who will hear, but we are also not to stray from speaking about sin. There are signs we can speak into, not to judge, but to seek to bring correction, as patterns of behavior can point to how the Holy Spirit is or is not at work in another. As the Holy Spirit works within us, our language will change, and so will our actions. The words, “Jesus is Lord,” as Paul points out, are powerful and can only be spoken in earnest through the power of the Holy Spirit, and the converse is true for utilizing the name of our Lord as a curse. A heart that belongs to God will find the misuse of God’s name to be unnatural and offensive. Through this change of heart and tongue, our Lord seeks to lead us all into His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
