Matthew 6:19–21

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 6:19–21, ESV

Our tendency is to place our hope in tangible things, our job, our marriage, our children, our church, etc. No matter how wonderful any of these things are, they will disappoint. When the things of this world fail us, it can lead us into despair and hopelessness. Christ will not. The promises of Christ surpass anything or any other person. He died on the Cross for our sins and redeems us. He is the center of all hope, and as we lay our hearts to rest with Him, we will find that all the things we need and desire are with Him, also. It is in Him that we can find the fullness of all joy as He changes our focus and gives us a new perspective. The world is shaped differently, and our wants and needs are transformed. The promises of this world will be less appealing as the hope of Christ fills us to the brim. We understand things differently, and over time, our views will change. As Christ shows us the truest treasure in all He has prepared for us, our eyes will want nothing less and we will fully know peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
