Certainly not! Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar. As it is written: “That You may be justified in Your words, And may overcome when You are judged.”
Romans 3:4, NKJV
When I was in seminary, no one would challenge the notion that the Bible is to be normative for the Christian faith, but they would often employ a subtle shift in wording by saying that the Bible contains the Word of God, rather than the Bible being the Word of God itself. It is a simple shift in words, but a major shift in thinking. By doing so, it made it easier to challenge portions of Scripture and attack those who defended it by saying that they were being too literal in their interpretation. The Bible is the Word of God, and it defines us as followers of Christ in how we live. The Word contains history, poetry, and prophetic words which are meant to be read as they are written, and each is meant to define who we are as the people of God. We are called to trust in God’s Word above anything and let the Word define us, and not us defining the Word. Ultimately, no matter what the world may say, we are called to cling to the promises of God and trust in Him above all else with the knowledge that all who believe will be led into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
