Colossians 2:8

See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

Colossians 2:8, ESV

Throughout human history, there have been those who attempt to define things of God by human reason over and against God’s Word. Because of this, humanity turned to false idols. The people of Israel would try to blend the worldly with the godly and incurred God’s ire for doing so. We have seen this in Christianity from time to time, as there have been those who have attempted to blend the Christian faith and have found it empty, and have deconstructed Christianity, leaving them believing that it was Christianity that was at issue and not themselves. When we fall into the belief that worldly philosophies are of greater value, we fall into idolatry and the trap of Satan that began in the garden with the words, “Did God really say…?” Our Lord calls us not to set aside reason but to look first to His Word and seek out His Will as we pray for guidance and understanding in everything we do. He desires for us all not to be deceived and led astray, but to know the truth which He reveals and enter into His glorious peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
