John 16:14

“He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.”

 John 16:14, LSB

As Luther wrote in his explanation of the third article of the Apostle’s Creed, “I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. ” This biblical truth is what Jesus spoke about when He spoke these words. The power of the Holy Spirit opens our hearts and minds to the reality of who Jesus Christ is. It isn’t something we come to believe through our own will or power. Throughout the Bible, we consistently hear the words, “I chose you.” This statement is full of promise because it reveals to us that our Lord did not choose us because we had it all together, but quite the opposite. He chooses us when we are at our worst and restores us to Himself. In His choosing, He opens for us the window of understanding and draws us ever nearer to Himself. The Holy Spirit opens the Word and shines out the light of hope. It is through this that we can hear the whispers of promise over the tumult of condemnation heaped upon us in the world. The darkest of days are brightened by His glorious light as the Holy Spirit unfolds for us with the gift of forgiveness and the plan of salvation. It is through His calling that our name is written with an iron pen in the Book of Life, and we are marked as His own and can walk in His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
