But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things, but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

Luke 10:41–42, LSB

How easy is it to become focused on the things we “need” to accomplish that we miss out on the message given to us by our Lord and the hope and the promise conveyed in His message? God is not opposed to us working. He wants us to work and do it well. The issue is how work can become the central thing. It is when work becomes the primary thing or when we work so hard that our relaxation is more important than our relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. Our Lord desires for us to rest in Him and take time to worship, pray, and study His Word. All of these things are not work, but they help develop the bond our Lord desires to have with all His people. If we don’t want these things, we need to ask ourselves, “Why?” and search our hearts for ways to come closer to our Lord, as these are the food for our souls. Mary’s desire for the Lord put her at His feet, while Martha was focused only on being a good host, drawn away from hearing the promise and knowing His peace. Let our hearts be drawn to our Lord and know when it is important for us to pause and rest in our Lord’s peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
