For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His.
Hebrews 4:10, LSB
We all know the adage, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” We also have heard it said that there is “no rest for the wicked.” These lies perpetuate our society. This phenomenon of working all the time is truly more of a Western mindset and most certainly a part of the American culture. It is a part of the pioneer spirit that the United States prospered under, the ethos of hard work and the pride of a job well done. When placed within a Judeo-Christian biblical framework, these aspects fit, as we are called to do all work to the glory of God, but we mustn’t forget to set aside time to rest. All things are called to rest in Christ, to recover and recoup while also taking time to focus on our faith and the blessings God has given us. In fact, God rewards hard work with times of healthy rest and recovery. Sadly, we often work as hard during our times of recreation as we do during our times of vocation, and miss the blessings of taking time and resting in Christ’s peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
