“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

Matthew 5:5, ESV

Meek, gentle, lowly, humble… are not words often celebrated in our world. As the adage goes, “The squeaky wheel gets the grease,” the rewards tend to go to the discontent and the dissatisfied. In anything, it is easier to think of the one who complains and forget the many who were happy especially if the words said are simple and kind. We will remember the special compliments, but they will often quickly dissipate with a single negative remark. To be meek, gentle, lowly, or humble isn’t a weak position, but is an active choice of restraint and a desire to seek contentment in any situation. Jesus’ anger was shown only once as He entered the Temple and saw the abuse that was occurring and getting in the way of honest prayer and worship. As we journey with our Lord, His calling for us is to be different. Different in our reactions and interactions. To never seek our satisfaction from the world but from God. If we allow our anger to be stirred up easily, we may miss opportunities to bless others and to shine Christ’s light. Our lack of humility will cause not only us to stumble but may be a stumbling block to those who may see us as their faith mentor. We are called to meekness, not weakness and as we stand steadfast in the promises of our Lord and firm in our convictions, we may bring peace into situations of chaos and mirror Christ to a searching people.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
