He himself gave the apostles, as well as the prophets, as well as the evangelists, as well as the pastors and teachers, for the purpose of training the saints for the work of serving, in order to build up the body of Christ.
Ephesians 4:11–12, EHV
Our Lord was deliberate in the building up of the Church in order to train and equip His followers to fulfill the callings He has prepared for them. We all have various roles in the life of our faith, but there are those that are central to help in fulfilling those roles, and these listed are special and set apart because they are vital to complete the work necessary for the building up of the Church of our Lord. We don’t just grow through our own will and action, but are called to be faithful in our listening to the apostles and prophets we find within the Holy Word, the evangelists who proclaim that Word, and the pastors and teachers who continue to speak that same Word. We, who believe, are the saints, and some of us are called to these roles to help others do the work that will maintain the faith as we walk in the orderly way which our Lord has prepared for His Church. In this, we may know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
