Genesis 22:15–17

The Angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said, “I have sworn by myself, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will bless you greatly, and I will multiply your descendants greatly, like the stars of the sky and like the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the city gates of their enemies.”

Genesis 22:15–17, EHV

It is difficult to give up things that are important to us, but we see Abraham and his willingness to give up what would be seen as his future for the Lord. Isaac was the only son born to him by Sarah. After waiting for more than two decades for his birth, it was a difficult burden on his heart. Yet, Abraham did not hold back and was blessed. In our age, we understand that God would never ask us to sacrifice our children literally, but we are called to give our children over to God. The call of every Christian parent is to raise their children to fear and love God and set them apart for God’s purposes. As parents, sending a child to a dangerous place for missions would be hard, but if that were his or her calling, we would have to send them with our blessing. Abraham was faithful to God in his willingness to give up his son and for his reward God blessed Abraham and Sarah with descendants too numerous to count. As we go forward in faith, we are called to set aside our desires and seek our Lord’s will in our lives, and we will watch our blessings grow in the generations of faithful descendants. We will not always get it right and neither will our children, but God can utilize the imperfect to fulfill His always perfect will and will show us His blessings for generations. In this, we may find His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
