Matthew 14:27–29

But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” And Peter answered and said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” And He said, “Come!” And getting out of the boat, Peter walked on the water and came toward Jesus.

Matthew 14:27–29, LSB

I could only imagine what the disciples felt when they saw Jesus walking on water. Now they had seen so many miracles, but this was probably mind-blowing, to say the least. Then Peter took a risk and listened and momentarily experienced the divine and for a moment let go of the fears of this world. God calls us out of our fears. He calls us out of what we know are the norms of the world and into the norms of God. God’s laws are not limited by our understanding. God can make five loaves and two fish feed over 5000 people and still have leftovers. He makes the blind see, the mute speak, the lame walk, and the dead return to life. He, also, took away all sin for all time. These are not within the norms of the world, but they are within the norms of God. All who are claimed by Him will know and live things greater than anything done before and it is all within God’s power. The issue is we only have glimpses here and then we are distracted by the winds of the world and lose sight all too easily. Why? This has been something I have struggled with as an idealist all my life, I am sure that others can relate. This world doesn’t play by God’s rules and we suffer for it. We, as followers of Christ, often miss the boat because we allow the whispers of the world to cause us to doubt and look away, but our Lord continually calls to us, “Come!” Step out and see what God can do and, in this, know Christ’s peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
