“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.”
Exodus 20:8–10, ESV
Sabbath rest is important to God. This is evident as we read in Scripture how often it is defended. In Jesus, we find the reasoning for this. We find that it is not so much about the day or even just taking time to relax, but it is about making sure that we rest in Him. We center our dependence on Him. Our Lord desires for us to take moments and pause in our lives to entirely rest in Him and completely place our trust in His providence. Do we believe that God will take care of us? If we were to stop our work and gather with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ to worship Him, would everything fall apart? Is it too much for God to set aside a day devoted to serving Him and serving our neighbor regularly in our week? These are the things that God wants us to know that He is there and is prepared to provide for all of our needs. It is so vital that He not only asks of it for His chosen, but everyone who is associated with His chosen. As Jesus said, “The sabbath is for man, not God,” let us walk in the assurances that our Lord knows our needs and is prepared to meet them and walk in His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
