Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.
Proverbs 11:28, ESV
To trust in something outside of God creates an idol of that object, person, or thing. Money is one of the most poignant examples of the hopeless nature it can bring when we place our trust in it. In every community and through every age, we can easily find examples of people who have fallen into despair because of financial strain and have taken their lives, and sometimes the lives of other family members. This is not new and is a sad reality of us as creatures. When we lose sight of God, it is easy to lose hope, and despair quickly follows. Christ is the only hope we have to cling to, and He does not fail us. He desires to be in the center of all things in our lives. He desires to constantly be in our line of focus, a reminder of the promise that is to come as we can see the truth of eternity ever before us. He redefines our relationships with all things: our money, our friendships, and ourselves. Money will be spent, friends and family relations may be strained, health will weaken, but Christ will always remain as a strong bulwark in our lives. This is His promise, this is our hope, and this is our peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
