Observe the Sabbath day by setting it apart as holy, just as the LORD your God commanded you….Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out from there with a strong hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the day of rest.
Deuteronomy 5:12,15, EHV
Jesus says the Sabbath was created for man. A time of rest is necessary for us, not only to restore our bodies. The reason for a Sabbath is for more than that. Like the manna, we are reminded to trust in God and His providence. In their wanderings, the children of Israel were told to take a double portion of manna on the sixth day because there would be none on the seventh, but if they tried to store more on any other day, it would spoil by morning, so people distrusted God and His promise twice. First, when they tried to save some extra just in case there wasn’t enough the next day, and then when they went out to collect more on the seventh day. God provides what we need for every day and wants us to place our trust fully in Him. Will things fall apart if we take a day? Will everything be alright if we rest and just worship God for a day? These are difficult realities we face as the world wants to keep us churning and off balance. God calls us to trust in Him and His providence and to find comfort in His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
