So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight.
2 Corinthians 5:6–7, ESV
Martin Luther King, Jr. is quoted as saying, “Faith is taking the first step when you don’t see the whole staircase.” We often have to step out in faith, not knowing for certain how God will make things work but trusting that He has it all planned. Entering ministry was such a step for my wife and me as we entered seminary without any established plan for how we would manage to pay for our housing, as we left our home to relocate to the seminary without any work. The same was true while awaiting my first call and needing to move out of campus housing. We always had a place to live, but we had to trust in God to ensure everything was in place for us to make ends meet. Though circumstances were uncertain, God never failed us, and we had confidence that He would find a way. When we are truly faithful to God’s calling in our lives, God provides. He provides a way for us to face all the challenges that come our way, even if the plan involves our lives being taken as martyrs. If evil is intended against us, God will turn it into good. This is God’s guarantee, and we are called to trust in Him, allowing our faith to define us rather than our circumstances. In this way, we may know His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
