Regard the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as also our dear brother Paul wrote to you, according to the wisdom that was given to him. He spoke about these things the same way in all of his letters. There are some matters that are hard to understand in his letters, which the ignorant and unstable distort, as they also do with the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
2 Peter 3:15–16, EHV
People like to distort the Word of God, so they may bend it to suit their personal interests. This has always been true. We can read in Job as his friends twist the faith that was taught to upbraid their friend in his time of suffering. We see this in Paul’s words of correction to those who were doing things contrary to what had been taught to them. Words can be twisted when taken out of context and made to bend and mold to mean the opposite of their intended meaning. This confuses some and can even lead followers astray if not corrected. Our calling is to be vigilant in our faith and not to be drawn hither and thither with ideas that are contrary to the Word of God, but we are meant to test all things against God’s Word and prayerfully seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance. We should not just bend to the ideas of this world, but be continually bent to the will of the Father as revealed in His Word and seek that which leads us all into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
