And He put all things in subjection under His feet and made Him the head over all things for the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all things in all ways.
Ephesians 1:22–23, MEV
The world often has problems with authority. We like authority when we feel things are being done in our favor, but we frequently rebel when the authority is put above us. People struggle when the proclamation of the Word gets a little too close to home, as the adage goes, “Everybody wants to go to heaven, but no one wants to die.” To be subjected to Christ is a calling to death. Death to self and new life in Christ. Letting go of our control and turning to His authority. Our Lord chose us, and in Him we have many promises He desires to fulfill for us. The greatest of these promises is new life, life eternal. As His body, we are called to live and act differently. Our lives are a part of a greater whole, united in a mission to proclaim Christ to all who will hear. We are called to remember our Lord’s walk and the family with which we are united within. Our message is beyond ourselves and is a calling to shine out Christ’s peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
