Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ? Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.
1 Corinthians 10:16–17, LSB
As we Christians gather at the Altar and partake of this glorious Sacrament, something special is being shared. Our Lord gives us His words, which are the giving of His body and His blood for us, of which we partake in, with, and under the elements of bread and wine. In this Sacrament, we take within us our Lord joined together in union not only with our Lord Jesus Christ but with one another as brothers and sisters united in the faith of His sacrifice and resurrection. We are called to stand unified in the promises of forgiveness but also the real presence of our Lord. The hypostatic union of our Lord is what unites us together as one body and one faith. There is not meant to be any division among us as brothers and sisters of Christ. As Christ is both God and man, we are made different through His redemption given to us. The mystery of how bread becomes the flesh of our Lord or how wine becomes His blood is not for us to fully comprehend, but His words are where we are to stand. It is here we are to see the fullness of our forgiveness and see the bond that unites us to those who receive it, not only at our altar but all who come before the table and receive these promises. As we receive this gift, we are called to stand united in prayer, proclaim His Word, and be bearers of His peace to a world seeking a better way and showing them our Lord.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
