Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weaknesses, for we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

Romans 8:26, MEV

It is amazing how grief contorts and changes people. As the ball of sadness and loss well up and bursts forth from a person, the words begin to fail as they are lost in mournful wails. Prayers cannot be formulated much less understood to those in hearing as the guttural sounds resonate as the mind cannot fully grasp much less hold on to the reality of the moment. Our Lord can meet us in these moments of despair and lift us and He understands the prayers pouring forth from our hearts as we are drained from the suffering in our souls. He can bring comfort as our bodies shudder, and we gasp for the next breath. In these times, we can find strength through Him holding us up and carrying us through these moments of great weakness. He hears the innermost cries of His beloved children and is attentive to every mournful moan as He draws us out of the depths of despair into our only place of comfort. He carries us out of the crushing waves of hopelessness and into His most glorious peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
