“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.
Ephesians 5:31–32, ESV
When we look at what God meant for the relationship of marriage to be, we are able to get a glimmer of what God means for our relationship to be with Him. Prior to the Fall, marriage was a perfect union of male and female to join together as one in all aspects of their lives. Not just for the mutual enjoyment of one another’s bodies, but the unbreakable intertwining of two lives become one. This is the type of relationship that God wants with us. He wants us to be one in Him as His Church. As we are called together as God’s chosen, the closer we become to Him, the closer we become to one another. Imagine the openness that could be accomplished and how different our lives would be together if we lived into this reality. Worship would become something fuller as we confess to God with one another of our need for Him and leave behind all the failures of our lives. No more hiding and feeling like there are things we no longer would want to be exposed. This is what God seeks from us. This is the relationship that Jesus spoke of when He spoke of love. This is the ideal that our Lord presents to us: no lipstick on a pig but the unvarnished faith of a people dedicated to Christ. He desires it for us to glimpse of it here and know it will be that way for eternity as we come together in His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
