Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.
Genesis 5:24, LSB
Enoch was described as being a faithful man. He was the great-grandfather of Noah and lived three hundred sixty-five years and, as it states, “he was not, for God took him.” It sticks out because it does not state that he died. We know that prior to the flood the false religion that surrounded the earth was great. We like to think that the times and the people before the flood were worse than our time. Yet, that is not what it says. Enoch may have been a great prophet in his time and there may have been people seen as being good and faithful for the time, yet they were devoted to things contrary to God’s will. The times may have been no different than what we see today. God seeks our full faith in Him and no other. What we may deem as good in the world, if it is contrary to God’s will, is sin, regardless of what we think. We cannot justify our sin because others don’t see it as wrong. We know that Noah still sinned after the flood and God was not unaware, but He promised never to bring a global flood again. His plan for Jesus was already in place before this, and we know that we are brought to our Lord, Jesus Christ from Noah. In Enoch, we see the grace of God and the mercy as it does not say that He removed Enoch for a purpose, but simply he was and then he was not. How we can interpret that is a multitude of ways, but we do know from his seed comes hope for all of Creation and ultimately leads us to the path that brings us to Jesus. As Noah built an ark, Jesus gave us Himself upon a Cross and as God shut the door of the ark, in Jesus, He opened a door for us to salvation into His eternal kingdom. In this, we may find peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
