Righteousness guards him whose way is blameless, but sin overthrows the wicked.
Proverbs 13:6, ESV
The world celebrates sin. Some may hear this and think, “Thanks, Captain Obvious!” Yet, others may still be surprised by this statement because they like to believe that the world, particularly its people, are mostly good, with a few bad actors. To walk the path of righteousness is difficult, as God’s steps are not like our own, and His thoughts are very different from our own. We see bad things in the world and wonder, “Why doesn’t God just stop it?” It’s true, God could stop it all in a moment, but what would that mean for us? Paul reminds us, “the wages of sin is death,” so if He were to bring judgment today, who would be lost forever? This is the reality we face because we know those who walk in unrepentant sin will not enter into eternal life. Anyone who gives lip service to God but does not truly follow our Lord, would they enter the kingdom? Being God is just and fair, it is not so easy a question to ponder. Our Lord wants us to know His comfort and joy. He calls us to walk with Him, and He waits for us to know His love and forgiveness, so we may enter into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
