But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Matthew 20:25–28, ESV
As we look to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, we are given a calling. Unlike the world, we are at our greatest before God when we are serving His creation. Caring for our neighbor, tending to our world, and helping those in need. It isn’t that we are just to offer social services, however. We are called to serve with our Lord’s words upon our lips, sharing the hope that is within us. We don’t just serve for the sake of serving. We serve with a purpose and that is to reflect the light of our Lord into the lives of others. It isn’t that we give the Gospel and then help another, but we give the Gospel while we are serving another. Some may listen and some may reject the words we say. Our proclamation may drive some of those seeking help away, but that is not our concern because we are different and meant to be so. When we proclaim Christ’s truth and offer help, we are not only giving help for this life, but we are leading others into the life to come and into our Lord’s peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
