Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart fail, But God is the rock of my heart and my portion forever.
Psalm 73:25–26, LSB
In what does your hope lie? Is it in your retirement? Is it in your financial reserves? Is it in a specific job or career path? Growing up, I dreamed of working in the corporate world developing foreign markets. It is amazing how God can change things when He takes precedence. When all your hope and satisfaction lie in Him, it is amazing how perspective changes. This does not mean that distractions won’t arise, and desires won’t present themselves. It is God’s continual calling out to His chosen and calling us to keep our eyes on Him so that we can refocus and seek our satisfaction in Him. The reality is that all the things of the world fail. People disappoint and will betray when the focus is not on God. Yet, we are called to focus on our Lord and the love He holds for all of His creation. Jesus never stopped loving Judas Iscariot and He never stops loving His chosen. When we fall victim to things of this world and our flesh fails us, He awaits our call and preserves us from the punishment we deserve. He is the only certain thing on which we may cling when everything else falls away because He stands steadfast and in Him, we may find our peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
