“I revealed your name to the men you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me, and they have held on to your word.”
John 17:6, EHV
Before I returned to Christ, I remember attending an evangelistic event called a Hell House with my future wife and her friend. This was like a Christian Haunted House that would walk you through various sin scenarios and then through Hell to a bright light and a room where a Gospel presentation was given on a video. It was interesting but not compelling for me at the time, but then we were released into a space full of young men and women to talk to you about Jesus and to convince you to pray a prayer accepting Jesus in your life. For me, it was not effective because I didn’t see anything for me in it at the time. I was cornered by this guy and was being pressured to believe which, to get away, I prayed the prayer and said, “Yes.” I knew what the young man was doing, and it made him feel better because, at the time, he believed he had won one for Christ. The reality is that no matter the pressure we cannot force someone to believe and that is because we can never win someone over to Christ. The Holy Spirit makes the call, and He may use us to witness the faith to another. Our witness is our tool, and we are meant to reveal Christ to all whom we meet. A prayer prayed to accept Jesus by coercion or force will not bring another to Jesus, but a life lived in the love and grace of our Lord while teaching who Jesus is may reveal the truth that is on their hearts. The Holy Spirit has already called them to know Christ, we just may help open the door and lead them into Christ’s peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
