Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.
Ephesians 5:4, ESV
God desires that our words and all that we say and do be utilized to glorify Him, yet most of us know how easy it is to slip into coarse or crude language. Out of frustration, words we know we should not say or normally would not say can fly out of our mouths before we know it. This is especially true for those who have wandered far outside of the ways of God and have returned. That old Adam likes to rear his ugly head and show others the dark self that lurks inside. Paul was aware of this, and our call is not to walk with a guilty, shame-filled heart, but to seek to praise God and remember all His blessings. We can rejoice, most particularly in His mercy and grace that He has poured out in such great abundance. Let our words be more reflective of our Lord’s mercy to all so they may be attracted to our Lord and His love out of the darkness and into His light as He calls us all into His peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
