John 6:63

“It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”

John 6:63, ESV

Jesus spoke these words to His disciples after he revealed to them that He is the bread of life. Troubling words to hear, which drove many away. There are those who like to think that Jesus’ words are meant to be attractive, which will make people feel comfortable and peaceful. Yet, as we study the Word, we find that often the words of our Lord are troubling because they are directed at the depths of who we are and challenge every norm of society. There are those who will walk away and will not choose Christ, as so many like to say. The greater struggle we contend with is the idea of choosing and biblically who chooses whom. Here we find that Jesus knows who is chosen and who is not. This is the reality of Scripture: not all are chosen. As the Holy Spirit works, the reality of who is God’s and who is not can become clearer. This is not our calling, however. We are not the ones who decide who is chosen or not, but are called to be faithful to our Lord’s Word and seek to lead all who will hear into His peace.

Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
