If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9, MEV
Confession is powerful. The benefits are beyond our full comprehension. Unlike confession we see in the movies with a priest offering forgiveness with a whole bunch of things to do to shore it up, but it is the hearing of the words of Christ from the lips of a confessor saying, “You are forgiven.” Period. Nothing more. It is a freeing word of hope that the sins will not be brought up again or remembered. If you commit the same sin again, like Jesus told the disciples, the same forgiveness is offered. Forgiveness is not limited and we know that the forgiveness is not just seven times or seven times seventy, but eternal and boundless. We don’t need to worry about doing enough, but know that it is done. Christ did it all. It is He who cleanses us and takes our unrighteousness away. We are made right through Him and His sacrifice. Though our sins aren’t just, our just God has taken them upon Himself for us and made us clean. Let this be the hope that you cling to as you walk through your day and feel our Lord’s peace.
Let us pray. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger, and I ask you to protect me this day also from sin and every evil, that in all I do today, I may please you. For into your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all that is mine. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the wicked foe have no power over me. Amen.
